Decision approaches provide an objective and transparent way to optimize future decommissioning decisions of offshore oil and gas infrastructure. Uptake and implementation of a flexible decisions approach will likely be limited by regulatory restrictions and public perceptions. Restrictions are driven by understanding environmental issues surrounding offshore decommissioning. Considerable environmental research is required to address this knowledge gap and provide increased certainty to facilitate changes in policy and perceptions.
